Looking for the Good: Red Eye
Looking anyone in the eyes and seeing their worth.
Red Eye is a Los Angeles based organization started by Justin Mayo with a focus on reaching two isolated demographics: those the world looks down upon and those who the world looks up to.
Much of the organization's work happens in Watts and along Skid Row, but they have a way of getting Hollywood and LA's influential involved even if it isn't widely known.
The lives of the lowliest - those who are homeless or living in poverty - aren't always given the dignity of being seen as a human being. On the flip side, the lives of those in the spotlight, are given a role in our culture as more than human that none of us were designed for.
Red Eye is working to see each person as a person no matter the life circumstance.
Red Eye hosts weekly Saturday youth mentoring in Watts, a Senior Citizen Prom at a nursing home in LA, a Strong Man competition along Skid Row for Father's Day, makeovers along Skid Row for Mother's Day, trick-or-treating for Watts kids in Beverly Hills, and helping at an orphanage in Mexico.
From reading between the lines on social, I'm pretty sure they do more, but caring for people doesn't always need to be publicized which is sometimes why the good stories are harder to find.
Recently Red Eye ran a successful campaign to purchase and keep a community center in Watts open. They renamed it "The Watts Empowerment Center" giving kids a safe place to grow up, and a chance to turn around the narrative of one of the hardest places to live in the country.
You can donate and learn more about Red Eye on their website redeye.org or learn about their Saturday youth mentoring program at youthmentor.org.
Red Eye is one of the organizations I chose to give to as part of my bucket list goal of working my way to giving away 90% of my income and living on 10%. I explain more in my "Generosity | Bucket List" post.
